THAT DRUMMER GUY'S 2017 YEAR IN REVIEW

At the time of writing this, there is only four more days left in 2017. While being one of the worst years to date, plenty of good came my way as well and arguably, some of the best things in my life happened in the confides of 2017.

The following wrap up is going to read like a bi-polar maniac that is off his meds and on a bender...or maybe it will come off more cohesive than originally planned. If you wanna read the ramblings of a 29 year old suicidally depressed man who has an extreme passion for music, then enjoy all I have in store!

Let's get the bad stuff out of the way

The Lows:

There has been many, and I mean many, terrible moments in my personal life this year. Ranging from family issues to losing friends to losing my health insurance to another suicide attempt. No matter how many good things happen in my life, the bad things will always take over and fluctuate my mind and not let up. As far as family issues, my family has been broken for 17 years now. I won't get into what was the catalyst for all of this, but I will just say after the summer of 2000, my family life was beyond repair. A great way to kick into my 12th year of life. From a brother who now has a failing body that matches the horrible attitude he has given me my whole life (the absolute biggest reason why I am a shell of the self I could have been had I realized younger in my life that he had no real control over my mental being) to my mom breaking several bones this year just from walking, to one of my sisters getting married without letting anyone on my side of the family know about it to myself consistently feeling like I am a failure at life...The Rundquist name does feel like a curse.

Which leads to my suicide attempt a couple months back...

This was my 6th attempt since I was 12. This time, nothing caused it except being sad. No getting my feelings hurt, no bad comments about me or my work, just utterly feeling sad and feeling that joy in life was gone. I was stopped for the 5th time and it was rather quick at that.

Now upon reading that, the numbers don't add up right? Well, the one time I wasn't stopped; well, the 4th anniversary of that occasion is coming up on Sunday night. To make a novel as short as I can. In August 2013, I got sick from various stomach issues, diabetes, exhaustion, and other variables I have yet to find out about, leading to many hospital stays, astronomical amounts of tests, and an unwanted addiction to the painkiller Dilaudid (Hospital grade heroin). In this time, I wanted to get off Dilaudid as I knew it was killing me. I was told to use Methadone and I did the very unwise thing of trying to quit cold turkey (which I later learned could have killed me from system shock). New Year's Eve was the breaking point for me. It was when a lot of people who I had in my life prior, abandoned me as they thought I was faking the whole thing, the radio station I was working for got rid of me on that suspicion without even asking me if it was true, and I was struggling to even remain conscious most days, let alone feel any better at any time during this. Around 10PM I gave up and went into my roommate's room picked up his gun, put the barrel in my mouth, and pulled the trigger....only to realize after I pulled the trigger that there was no bullets in the gun.

In a way that was the best thing that could have happened to me as I was still here, and about 2-3 weeks later I finally started to get better and went from death's door to searching for a reason to live. That's why I'm still here now. From December 19th to January 1st every year, it's the worst time of my life as so much reflection is going on during this time that I feel like I will never be able to escape. So until after New Years, I will be living in my own personal hell,. but I am doing my best to keep from falling down into my suicidal stupor and fight like hell to be happy.

But back to the latest attempt, nothing caused it from outside sources, it was just me feeling sad. That is the worst thing about depression. So many people believe that just because it's all in your head, that means you are faking it, when it couldn't be further from the case. Mental health is a very important and vital aspect of health and while others can blame that for other heartbreaking moments in life, not many people are actively trying to find out how to make this illness have a cure. But that's a pedestal I am not going to step upon. 2017 was such a terrible year for people in every facet of life; turning this into a political issue is not what I want to start.

Another bad aspect of my life right now is having to leave my current apartment complex. I have lived here since I moved to Minnesota 2 and a half years ago and with Depression and Anxiety and social awkwardness, I hide in my apartment as often as I can and still be sane. Sadly, this year they raised the rent to higher numbers than I could ever afford (330 bucks a month since moving in 2 and a half years ago.) So moving in a Minnesota winter is the absolute last thing I want to do, but sadly as I already signed, I don't have a choice. And with that, I do not know when I will be able to present my show or be able to do interviews again once I cut the internet off here and get it restored in a new place.

The silver lining with that is I may have found a new place that bigger, cheaper, safer, and has more stuff I want in an apartment. So as long as everything checks out, things should be going in the right direction.

With my career, the only downside to this year is learning that I may have lost my last FM affiliate due to the station potentially going under. It was the first station that gave me a chance once I branched out on my own as That Drummer Guy and it really tears me apart that the station may be going away. With this I may be going podcast only for the rest of my run (which isn't even coming close to be done as long as I have something to say about it) or maybe another FM affiliate will chime in, enjoy my work and may want to air my show. Time will tell.

The last bad aspect I wanna go over is losing people you care about. I lost quite a number of people in the last year, whether it be permanently from death or lost people over stupid reasons, this year I have felt more alone than I have in other years. You would never guess that from how many interviews I have done this year, but it is quite true, I am quite the sad, lonely guy. The worst part about it is that I am so afraid to reach out to people, no matter how many times people reassure me it's ok to reach out to them, I freeze up and can't do it. I was raised to believe no one cares about me and my struggles so it's important to keep things to myself. That is exactly why i choose this kind of platform to say my piece. Some people will reach out to me to make sure I'm ok, some people will think I am weak and pathetic, and others who have no idea how to respond to something like this will at least know that I'm hurting (whether that is a good or bad thing is completely to the eye of the beholder).

Now with all of that said, there has been some incredible times I've had this year as well.

Let's start off with all the work pertaining to That Drummer Guy

This year I have done 52 radio shows (not missing one week worth of shows at all).

Outside of any last minute opportunities or emails coming back to me this late in the game; I have done 162 interviews this year between Phone, Skype and written interviews, which is absolutely insane! That's not too far off from doing an interview every other day of 2017. I have gotten to talk to some of the biggest bands in the business right now including Asking Alexandria, Between The Buried And Me, Blind Guardian, Cannibal Corpse and so many more! I have gotten to talk to some of my favorite musicians for the very first time including the likes of John Bush, John Arch, Max Cavalera, Carmine Appice and so many more.

I have gotten more promos from some of my favorite labels and PR affiliates that I never would have dreamed that I would be able to achieve.

I also got to go to two shows that I never would have dream that I would be able to see: Iron Maiden and Billy Joel; just from being a good guy and supporting who I care about. It brings a tear to my eye that I am able to say those kinds of things have happened now from being That Drummer Guy.

I also am back in the drumming game with my new band, Systemic Collapse. I found two guys that I connect with on so many levels that I didn't even know was possible. It's just three guys who can completely treat each other respect, have similar mindsets and have a musical chemistry that I didn't even realize was possible in a band. We are hoping to have some kind of recording in 2018, even if it is just in demo form, or maybe even an official release if things keep going they way that they are now. Possible live shows? Definitely possible. In all honestly the last thing I care about anymore is getting on stage and playing live after being burned so many times in past bands. I am just happy to be able to jam out with guys I care about and making music I love. Anything that comes from that is just a bonus to me.

As far as other things in life; I have been able to enjoy myself a lot more this year (which is odd considering all the bad stuff noted earlier) I have been able to game more, my eyes are better than ever, my health, while still shaky, is manageable, and like mentioned earlier, I may have a new place lined up that will feel like home coming up in February.

So now that you heard the bad and the good from my own year, what should you take way from all of this?

In my mind, I would like to think that reading this will give people perspective in my life and why I am the way I am.

I'd also like to think that a good moral can come from this that no matter how hard someone is struggling, there are still things in life that are worth living for if you just try.

And if neither of those are the case, maybe just reading this gave you a perspective that is not your own, which is always a good thing to keep in mind, especially to make the world a better place.

So what's my plan(s) for 2018?

For the first time possibly ever in my life, I have no aspirations, no goals, no  new plans. I am just going to try to keep up the positivity that I can see in my life and find any way possible to not let the negativity affect my life in a way that will make me attempt to end my life again.

If the radio show ends up being podcast only, that actually gives me a lot more freedom to be able to do things in a way that I have yet to try. SO out of that negativity may come positive outcomes.

Systemic Collapse. I'm just going to let it ride. No expectations, just see where things go and make this as organic as possible.

If you took the time to read all of this...Thank You. I am proud to be able to say I have made a career for myself as a one man operation showing off all the bands that deserve love no matter how big or small of an audience they have. It's a role that I will be doing for my 7th year in 2018 and I wanna make it the best I can by being myself.

Here's to hoping for myself, everyone reading this, and for everyone else that 2018 does not continue to be a dark cloud casting over us all, but finally the breaking of the clouds to enjoy the light that can make us all feel life is worth living.

The end of 2017 is quite strange for me as I am in the midst of moving next year, starting up my new band, and already working on 2018 interviews.

But I still wanted to show off the fact that I  do more than just interviews and talk about albums. in this article, I am going to speed run through my favorites of everything else I enjoyed this year; the rest of the music I didn't get to, and other forms of entertainment. I hope you enjoy it like I do.

Should also add that these will NOT be in countdown order and sadly are not as detailed at the Top 100 Albums list, ain't nobody got time for that!

THAT DRUMMER GUY'S FAVORITE MOVIES OF 2017

1.) Get Out
I'll go on record and say that not only is this my favorite movie of the year and the best horror movie of 2017, but quite possibly the best horror movie made to date.

2.) Logan
The only X-Men movie to date that I have enjoyed and what a great send off to one of the best superheros Marvel ever had to offer.

3.) Guardians of The Galaxy: Vol 2
Fun, Fun Fun! That's all I want from the Guardians movies and this brings that in strides.

4.) Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
I wanted to see the Star Wars movies turned on it's head instead of just a re-imagining of The Empire Strikes Back. I am so thankful they did this this way. I can't wait to see how things go with Episode IX!

5.) The Belko Experiment
While not the most imaginative horror concept; this film really showcases what human nature is really all about and the realities of why we fail as a society. Fantastic stuff!

6.) Thor Ragnarok
Fun, Funny, and Exciting. While it feels all of the Marvel movies are going to be going into this direction, it's not yet taken precedent over the story *COUGH DC COMICS MOVIE UNIVERSE COUGH* So as long as they maintain this right balance, they are doing things perfectly.

7.) It Comes at Night
Much like The VVitch; this film doesn't offer anything as far as jump scares or torture porn....and that is exactly why I love it. Much like Get Out and The Belko Experiment mentioned above, the real horror is about the human condition under different circumstances. Just brilliant story telling.

8.) Kong: Skull Island
I was very scared going into this movie in fear of messing things up, but as I left the theater, I couldn't have been happier with how it turn out. The fact this is playing into Godzilla as well makes the monster movie fanboy in me scream in joy. I just hope they continue to do it right.

9.) Spider-Man Homecoming

The best showcase of Spider-Man on film. Let's just hope the rest of his adventures continue to do this version justice.

10.) It
The best remake of 2017 (Which really isn't that hard to do, honestly) but a great re-imagining  as well. Less campy, more scares, but also more philosophical and mental scares and storytelling are at hand. What a great way to rework this masterpiece.

Picture
THAT DRUMMER GUY'S TOP 3 PS4 GAMES OF 2017

I am only counting brand new games from this year that I've completed. A majority of this year was going back and playing games that I didn't really get to experience much in the past on PS4: Borderlands, Fallout, Skyrim, etc. Possibly next year I will be investing more time into gaming for some side action on this site.

1.) Horizon Zero Dawn
Game of the 21st Century So Far!

2.) Last Day Of June
Short, novel, heartbreaking, and really makes you reevaluate life. Thank you based Steven Wilson!

3.) South Park: The Fractured, But Whole
Expanding upon The Stick Of Truth, this takes on the superhero world in a way only South Park can. I dig the combat style way more this time around and it feels great to have a much longer game this time around as well. If you enjoyed South Park at any point of their incarnation, you'll dig this game.

THAT DRUMMER GUY'S TOP WWE MATCHES OF 2017

After a 17 year hiatus, I got back into wrestling in a big way back in January. The following matches are why I continue to watch: IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER

AJ Styles Vs John Cena
Royal Rumble 2017

The match that made me realize the caliber of the actual wrestling matches is better than it's ever been.

Pete Dunn vs Tyler Bate
NXT Takeover: Chicago

The best match of 2017

Authors of Pain VS D.I.Y. (Ladder Match)
NXT Takeover: Chicago

Perfect storytelling from start to finish and after the finish....woah!

The Hardy Boyz vs Shaemus and Cesaro (Steel Cage)
Extreme Rules

This is how you do proper storytelling in the WWE. The highs, the lows, the surprise ending. It had it all.

Asuka Vs Ember Moon
NXT Takeover Brooklyn III

The best Women's match of the year, if not the best Women's match I have ever seen. It's too bad the main roster will never be as good.

The New Day vs The Usos
Summerslam

The best tag team match of the year?

AJ Styles Vs Finn Balor
TLC

Match of the year!

NXT Takeover: War Games
THE ENTIRE BILL

This entire PPV is exactly why I continue to watch!

And that's what I got for 2017! I actually plan on making a video talking more in depth about my life in 2017 as far as personal stuff, but as far as lists go. I hope this continues on the track of showing off the good stuff that's all over this world.

Till 2018, this is That Drummer Guy saying....See Ya!

Written Interview: Lunar (California Progressive Rock/ Progressive Metal)

12/12/2017

Comments

Picture
Lunar is a Sacramento Progressive Rock/Progressive Metal duo that showcases so much talent and potential between just two guys (and the occasional guest spot.) Having reached out to me and discovering this amazing debut album Theogony, out now through Divebomb Records; I had the chance to be able to talk to Alex Bosson (Also of the band, Helion Prime) a few questions about this new musical endeavor. Check it out!

Thank you very much for taking the time to do this interview! For those that may be new to the band. Describe Lunar.
I’d say we’re somewhere between progressive rock and progressive metal.  I think you’ll hear a lot of diversity in the sound and influences from song to song, but the biggest influences are probably Opeth, Tool and Porcupine Tree.  We’re a studio project and the core “band” is myself and Ryan Erwin.  We handled all the songwriting and lyric writing and then all the other parts were outsourced to guest musicians.  Think similar to what Ayreon does on an album, but a little different.

Just a little under a month ago, you released your debut album, Theogony, through Divebomb Records. How has the reception been to the album since it’s release?
The reception has been overwhelmingly positive for me! Better than I ever expected.  I’ve heard some feedback from fans that has all been really positive.  One fan called it a masterpiece, which is huge for me.  The reviews of the album I’ve read are better than I ever could have imagined.  And the album even made Prog Sphere’s list of Best Albums of 2017, which I’m really proud of.

How did it feel to finally be able to write, record and release your first album as Lunar?
It feels amazing!  The positive reception definitely helps with that great feeling… haha!  But really, it’s just a huge personal accomplishment for me.  I spent so much of my time, money and effort working on this album to make it what it became.  It was frustrating at times, and at other times some of the most fun I’ve had in my life!  The album took me almost 3 years to finish, which is a really long time, but it was totally worth it.  I’m really proud of the final product and happy to have it out!

Lunar covers so much ground in what I love about progressive music. From the song structures to the influences to the musicianship. Was this always the mentality of the band or did it flourish into this since
you started?

I think it was always the mentality of what I had in mind for the music.  Progressive rock and metal is the kind of music that I personally love the most, so it makes sense that it would turn out that way.  But I don’t really set out to structure a song any particular way for the most part.  It’s more of just starting with a riff or idea and letting the song build naturally from there into what feels appropriate.

What would you say is the biggest change in the band since 2014’s debut EP, Provenance?
So much has changed since then it’s hard to say what the biggest change is.  The songwriting I think is a big one.  With the EP everything was handled by Ryan, myself and our former keyboardist.  But with this album I dropped the mentality of needing a “band” so to speak and was willing to outsource whatever was necessary to ensure the music came out exactly as I wanted and the best it could possibly be.  Having that restriction lifted and getting all the guest musicians I think opened the door to allow the album to flourish much more than it would have had Ryan and I tried to handle every part ourselves as we did with “Provenance”.

Theogony features quite a number of guest spots. How did you guys land everyone to lend a hand on this
album?

Well many of them are people that I know personally.  Ryan Price who played bass and Brian Lewis who did the growl vocals are good friends of mine.  The female vocals were done by my wife.  And a few of the guest guitar solos were friends of mine as well.  But many of them were just people who I knew of and was a fan of, but didn’t know personally.  Lucky for me we live in an age where you can easily reach out to anyone around the world.  So really that’s all I did.  I reached out to these guys by email or through social media and told them about the project and asked them to contribute.  Personally, I think it’s pretty rad the way it worked out!  And we’re also in an age where so many musicians have their own recording set up, so that made it pretty easy as well.   I’d send them the tracks and explain a rough idea of what I wanted them to do and over what part and then I’d just let them do their thing.  They’d record their part in their home studios and then send me the track of what they did.  Really one of the toughest parts was figuring out who I could reach out to who’s playing style was gonna fit well with each specific part.  But honestly, there’s not a single guest appearance on the album that I’m unhappy with.  They all did an incredible job!

What kind of drum setup do you use with Lunar?
I use Tama drums exclusively.  For “Theogony” I used my Starclassic Performer solid birch kit.  It’s a 22 inch kick (with Speed Cobra double pedal), 8, 10 and 12 rack toms and 16 inch floor tom.  And on that recording a used a Tama SLP 7x13 maple snare drum.  I use the Tama Star hardware and can’t endorse that enough!  It is the most durable and adjustable hardware I’ve ever seen and every drummer should be using it!  I use Zildjian cymbals.  Mostly K Custom’s and A Custom’s with a few others in there (too many to list every single one….  The readers would get bored… haha!).  And I use Pro Mark sticks.

If this is what you guys are capable with your debut album, what should people expect for the next release?
God, that’s such a tough question to answer…  I honestly didn’t even really know I was capable of doing what I did with “Theogony”.  It just kind of naturally progressed over time into what it became.  So, the simple answer is that hopefully I’ll be capable of doing more with future releases.  Hopefully the songs will speak to people musically and lyrically.  I hope to step up the diversity and keep things fresh.  I don’t ever just want to make the same record over and over again.  Hopefully the musicianship will continue to improve, as every musician should aspire to improve, no matter what stage they’re at, in my opinion.  And hopefully we’ll get some other cool guest musicians on the next record!  I know there are plenty of people out there that I admire that I’d be thrilled to get to contribute on the next release.  Really, as long as we continue to make the music that’s true to who we are and if people keep enjoying it, there’s really nothing more I could ask for.

What is next for Lunar?
It was such a long road to get to where we are now, that we’re just kind of riding the wave of the current release.  We don’t have anything specific set in stone for the future.  There will definitely be a Lunar album #2.  Somewhere within the chaos of everything I’m doing, Ryan and I plan to start writing the next album sometime in 2018.  That’s about all I can say for now.  But it will come, so stay tuned!

You also play in the awesome band Helion Prime. What is it like to be able to show off your creativity between two quite different bands?
It’s really cool!  I love being able to do both bands.  They’re very different experiences for me.  Lunar is like my baby… my brain child.  I pour my heart and soul into it and really put myself out there.  For “Theogony” I acted as kind of a director of sorts in arranging the music and writing most of the lyrics and finding all the guest musicians and directing them on who was to play on what parts and deciding what each song / part needed.  With Helion Prime I don’t do that.  HP is a full band and I’m just the drummer.  Obviously I can still have my creative input on things (especially with the drum parts), but I don’t make the final calls of song structures and themes in HP as I do for Lunar.  So I get to kind of focus on different aspects of creativity with both groups.  And with HP I get to play live and tour, which I don’t with Lunar.  And the 2 bands are also pretty different in style.  While they both have progressive elements to them, HP is a power metal band and so my playing style is a bit different with them from what I do with Lunar.

In speaking of Helion Prime, what is next for you guys?
Well I just finished tracking drums for the second HP album.  The material is really cool and I can’t wait til we get to show it to the world!  The album should be out sometime in the spring or summer of 2018, I believe.  We’ll be shooting a couple music videos for some of the new songs here in the next few months, which should be a lot of fun!  And, I can’t talk details yet, but we have some stuff in the works for some touring in 2018 as well.  Stay tuned for the details, but we’ll definitely be hitting the road in 2018 for sure!

What are you currently listening to?
Well my favorites stay on rotation for me almost daily.  I’m always throwing in stuff like Opeth, Tool, Porcupine Tree, Katatonia and Haken.  But as for some of the newer releases of 2017; my favorite album of this year, without a doubt has been “To The Bone” by Steven Wilson.  Absolutely brilliant album!  I love the new Ayreon album, “The Source.”  The new Ne Obliviscaris album “Urn” is pretty great.  I’m digging “In Becoming A Ghost,” the newest album from The Faceless.  And I recently discovered Lunatic Soul and picked up their newest record “Fractured” and I’m in love with it!  That is actually, quite literally, what I’m listening to right now as I do this interview.  Oh, and I’m thrilled to get a new track from A Perfect Circle this year after such a long wait!  I can’t wait to hear the album they put out to go with that new song!

What do you like to do when you are not focused on Music?
Honestly, so much of my life is focused on music in one form or another, there’s almost nothing I do that isn’t music related.  I work at a music store as my 9 to 5 job.  And when I’m not there I’m almost always working on something that’s music related, whether it be for Lunar or Helion Prime, or something else.  Really the only thing I ever do that’s not music related is watching TV and movies.  I love the Marvel comics movies and shows!  I just finished watching The Punisher on Netflix and I loved it!!

Thank you very much for taking the time to do this interview. I really enjoy what you have done with Lunar and really looking forward to everything you have in store in the future. Before we are done is there anything else you would like to mention that I haven’t brought up yet?
I think you did a great job of covering all bases.  I can’t think of anything you missed.  Thanks for doing this interview with me!  And thanks for the interesting and unique questions.  Also want to make it a point to say thanks to all the fans for taking the time to read this and anyone who’s picked up “Theogony.”  And anyone who wants to check it out you can snag a copy at lunarbandofficial.bandcamp.com or from Divebomb Records.

IT'S FINALLY HERE! IT'S FINALLY HERE!!! Sans the rules I've been putting into every single part of this Top 100 list. Let's get crackin'!
For any first timers to my style of Best of Lists, here is a quick run down (which I'll also be featuring on the other parts of the top 100 and other musical lists as well.)

As with the last few years of this list I made up criteria of what constitutes this list and it is as follows:

1.) A full release
2.) Not a live album, covers album, Best of, or b-sides/rarities album. A complete original studio album (bonus covers or live tracks are A-OK)
3.) Of the Rock/Metal varieties (From Pop Rock, to Death Metal, to Noise can make this list)
4.) I had to have either bought the album or received the album via promo, by the release date of December 8th. IF you release an album after this date, you are just being a jerk to everyone that wants to show you off on their Best Of Lists.
5.) My personal taste

A bit more rambling before the list commences...
I can't state enough how any album featured in the following 100 albums are albums I really, really enjoy. Not a single one of these I consider to be bad or meh or something I feel you shouldn't check out. While many struggle to put together 3 or 5 or 10 of their favorite albums of the year. I struggle to make a top 100 without feeling like I left something awesome out.
And with that, there will no doubt be albums that people will not see in any of the following lists (100 best of, EPs, covers, epics, etc) that people will feel like I am insane for not putting on these lists. Here is why they are not going to be on those lists in order of likelyhood...

1.) As noted above, I didn't get to listen to it enough.
2.) Did not hear it at all.
3.) It's just not my bag, baby.

HERE IT IS, THE TOP 20 ALBUMS OF 2017!

20.) Dead Quiet- Grand Rites
FFO- Progressive Metal, Heavy Metal, Experimental

This is really a band that is hard to categorize and you can call them by many labels and somehow, it will be a good description. Coming from the music city that is Vancouver, Dead Quiet has released their sophomore album and it is everything I need in a musical journey, Catchy, Heavy, Emotional, Mind Mending, Jaw Dropping, And Some Of The BEST Written Songs of 2017! If you dig bands from the Vancouver area like Bend Sinister, Barn Burner, Anciients, and 3 Inches Of Blood...you're in luck as past and present members of all those bands are in Dead Quiet. It's quite the hodgepodge on paper, but the end result is pure, unadulterated magic. Go check it out!

19.) Akercocke- Renaissance In Extremis
FFO- Progressive Black Metal

Another band that I never would have thought would reunite, returns with their most stellar album to date. Such a great mix of Black Metal, Atmospheric, Death Metal, and Prog; Akercocke is showing bands that have come after them how this style of music is done. Stellar from start to finish and some versions come with a bonus disc of demos and covers that is absolutely worth checking out. Once you hear this band, you'll understand how they paved the way for so many bands that they influenced and it's about time they got the love they deserve.

18.) Toothgrinder- Phantom Amour
FFO- Mellow Metal

While the name and especially the first album does not show this aspect at all; Phantom Amour is one of the most mellow, atmospheric and original Metal albums to come out in 2017. This, without question, is a polarizing album as the Math Metal side of the band is shown at maybe 5-10% capacity, while the more mellow, melodic and dare I say pop driven, Metal songs take complete precedent. If I had to describe it, imagine the lighter ends of Periphery mixed with Devin Townsend Project's Sky Blue album and throw in some Post Rock for good measure. At first I was completely shocked by the album, then listen after listen after listen, I realized this is one of the best albums of the year. I kinda really hope they keep up this style as we need more original sounding music in Metal. Kudos boys, KUDOS!

17.) The Contortionist- Clairvoyant
FFO- Atmospheric Metal, Progressive Rock

The Contortionist, whether it's intentional or not, has gotten progressively lighter with every album and that's honestly the best thing that could happen for the band. With the band's second album with frontman Michael Lessard, the band ee3xplores more of their atmospheric and prog rock elements that was always a part of the band, but never took center stage till their previous album, Language. This is a feel good Metal album you need in your life. It gives an overall message that there is still time in your life to make yourself a better person; I can't think of a better selling point for an album in today's climate. Kick back, relax, and enjoy the musical renaissance that is The Contortionist.

16.) Obituary- Obituary
FFO- Classic Death Metal

Do you like Obituary? Do you like their Classic Death Metal Sound? Do you wanna hear a brand new album filled with the best parts of their music style? Do you wanna hear the BEST Pure Death Metal album of 2017? If you answered yes to any of those 4 questions pick up this album, NOW!

15.) Anathema- The Optimist
FFO- Progressive Rock, Gothic Rock, Electronic

I'm pretty sure this will be the closest thing we will get to a positive Anathema album. The conceptual sequel album to 2001's A Fine Day To Exist; Anathema puts out an album that thematically continues the concept talked about in said album but flourishes it out to be a fantastic musical endeavor. Some of the bands heaviest moments in decades is shown off here, some of the band's most emotional moments are shown off as well. Basically if you love Anathema or enjoyed anything they've done since after their Doom Metal days, you will enjoy this album. Will it be your favorite? That's up to you, but you'll never know until you check it out!

14.) Power Trip- Nightmare Logic
FFO- Thrash Metal, Crossover Thrash Metal

There are three main types of Thrash going on today. A Revival of the 80s thrash scene, the Municipal Waste/Iron Reagan style Thrash that focuses on fun and funny stuff, and then there's the trend I hope Power Trip starts...reinventing Thrash! No extra layers, no fluff, no filler, just pure heavy music with the basic of instruments and an absolutely killer sense of songwriting. Power Trip is what I hope will help save Metal from monotony. They are doing it so far, but I just hope every band after Power Trip will learn a thing or two from these guys.

13.) Steven Wilson- To The Bone
FFO- Progressive Rock, Art Rock, Pop

I am so happy to say that this is the most successful Steven Wilson album to date (in any band he's ever been a part of). While a polarizing album, I honestly consider it the 2017 Edition of Porcupine Tree's Lightbulb Sun. All the same poppy moments, the right amount of Prog, Just enough Heavier moments to not feel like a metal album. Just overall....a fantastic display of music. While it took Steven Wilson till the age of 50 to REALLY hit the masses outside the prog community, this was definitely the right album for it to happen. Pure Perfection!

12.) Loch Vostok- Strife
FFO- Extreme Progressive Metal

When I first discovered these guys with the album, V: The Doctrine Decoded, I considered them to be a perfect blend of Emperor and Fates Warning that I didn't know I needed in my life. While quite different from that description; I think it still fits into what the band is doing these days. Great Extreme Metal moments that would make Ihsahn happy, while having some great experimental and prog metal moments that a Fates Warning fan would love. Strife takes everything they have done since their beginnings and made one of the more angry albums in their catalog and for good reason. The world sucks right now in so many ways. This album really shows off why it sucks and maybe even give insight on what to do to make it better. Loch Vostok is a band that I can't support enough and easily deserve any and all love they get. Give them some more love by checking them out and being their newest fan. You know you wanna!

11.) Zornheym- Where Hatred Dwells and Darkness Reigns
FFO- Symphonic Black Metal, Progressive Metal, Horror

Talk about a debut album! A insane concept album album about an Insane Asylum and backstories of some of of the inmates it holds. It is as sick, twisted and wonderful as it sounds and totally fits the need for a horror movie that need to be made out of this. The musicianship is phenomenal, the songwriting is so fitting, and everyone involved on this album made this album beyond stellar. I was lucky enough to have this album just a tad earlier than others so I really got to digest it and I gotta say, the more you listen, the more you find, and the more you will become obsessed with Zornheym. I can't wait for album 2!

10.) November's Doom- Hamartia
FFO- Doom Metal, Progressive Metal, Death Metal

One of the best underappreciated bands going! When I saw November's Doom live in Minnesota in 2009, I was already a fan, but I grew to love them so much more after the show. Everything about this band just hits home on so many levels. Hamartia is one of the most emotionally driven albums in the band's discography. The more Death and Doom elements are more dialed back than previous albums, but are still there. This focuses more on Paul Kuhr's clean vocals rather than his ferocious growls (Don't fret, they are still there!). This album really hits me hard lyrically and if you are anything like me, they will for you too. Go check out one of the best US Metal bands to exist.

9.) Enslaved- E
FFO- Progressive Black Metal, Viking Metal

I have absolutely no idea how Enslaved does it. Even with losing a key member of the band in the last year, the band has put out their finest album to date. While I KNOW that statement is enough to cause discussion. I love the Enslaved Prog era more than the original Enslaved Black Metal era. It has the right amount of prog with clean vocals mixed with the Black Metal and Viking Metal elements that blend together in perfect harmony. With E, the band continues on this route but makes things more Atmospheric than ever before. It's a completely solid 6 song album that takes you on a journey you will not soon forget. I think I may have seen Enslaved more than any other band in my life time, there's a reason for that! Check out E for the latest example as to why.

8.) Ne Obliviscaris- Urn
FFO- Extreme Progressive Metal

One of my favorite bands currently going has blessed us with their 3rd LP offering, Urn. This is easily the most cohesive and mature album to date. While we still go on many epic adventurous over the course of this album, things are more scaled back for songwriting sensibility and boy, that was a great move! All the most emotional moments are pushed to the forefront with great purpose, the musicality is even tighter than before, and the band is really showing off what they are musically capable of. Don't let internet trolls deter you, NeO is what the world needs now in extreme music and they are carrying the flag on what is possible and I couldn't love it more!

7.) Toehider- Good
FFO- A little bit of every genre you love

Toehider is capable of writing any kind of song in any style. In the past he has written everything from Folk to Indie Pop Rock, to Strapping Young Lad inspired anthems and I'm still missing a good chunk of genres covered. Good features much more of the Progressive Rock and Metal sides to his playing while still many of the quirks that makes him stand out compared to others around. And don't forget about his incredible vocal range! The song, How Do Ghosts Work?, is my favorite song of 2017; all you need to do is listen to it all the way through to understand why. Toehider, I really hope, will become the new Arjen Lucassen or Mike Portnoy, or Mikael Akerfeldt. The man is capable of writing everything and anything and make it coherent and so enjoyable. I can't wait for the next release, thankfully I have Good, plus his back catalog to enjoy till then. You should get them too! It's....GOOD!

6.) Mastodon- Emperor Of Sand
FFO- Progressive Metal, Progressive Rock, Sludge

I know so many people in my personal life that have hated the direction of Mastodon since Crack The Skye; I for one started to LOVE them since Crack The Skye! The Hunter is one of the finest albums written in the 21st Century. Once More Round The Sun is the hunter but more refined. But Emperor Of Sand....WOW!!!! It combines every single thing I love about the band in one album. It can go off on Prog tangents, it can go into Top 40 Rock tangents and it will all equally make sense. Roots Remain is easily the best song the band has written since Hearts Alive, if not ever (go ahead, fight me!). Mastodon deserves to be one of the best known bands going today, they earned it with all 7 albums so far. I can't wait to see what's next for the next seven albums from Mastodon.

5.) Ayreon- The Source
FFO- The Best of Progressive Metal

If you ever want to hear the best singers in Prog and Power Metal sing a conceptual story written by one of the greatest minds in metal music than you have no excuse to continue skipping out on Ayreon. The Source serves as a prequel to the whole Ayreon experience so far featuring some of the top names in Metal vocals. The songs are beautiful, catchy, soothing, heartbreaking, and lovable. Plus Arjen Anthony Lucassen, I can't stress my admiration for this man enough. Everything he writes turns to musical gold to me. This is just the latest piece of gold. You need this in your music library. Once you do, you'll never be able to go back!

4.) SikTh- The Future In Whose Eyes?
FFO- Progressive Metal, Technical Metal, Experimental

SikTh....what a band! Some of the most talented musicians on this planet are in this band and they have been so gracious to give us their first EP since reforming. If you've ever enjoyed the band in the past, this album features something you love about the band and then some. The beautiful choruses, the mesmerizing vocals, the spellbinding songwriting, and the completely odd sense to make everything cohesive and memorable. SikTh needs all the love...ALL THE LOVE. The guys are just simply incredible on and off the stage and should be headlining in North America every year. Let's make that happen in 2018. go pick this album out and find out why music is far from a dead scene.

3.) Zeal and Ardor- Devil Is Fine
FFO- If African American Spirituals were about Satan and not God

Not only my discovery of the year (technically around this time last year, but I got the promo early so it counts), but one of my favorite discoveries EVER! Taking the concept of mixing African American Spirituals mixed with Black Metal and you have the most intriguing mashup to ever be made in Heavy music. This concept is straight out of a horror movie that needs to be made. African Americans embracing the name of Satan rather than god, then revolting against their owners in bloodshed. The whole album plays out like a Horror movie as well (In a way, set it up as the soundtrack Get Out, it works). With this being the first official LP for the project and the band really picking up notoriety this year (especially from guitarist Tom Morello); Zeal and Ardor are going to continue to take the Metal world by storm. I am on the edge of my set waiting to see what's next.

2.) Pallbearer- Heartless
FFO- Doom Metal, Progressive Rock

I have enjoyed Pallbearer since day one, but it wasn't until I saw them open for Baroness last year in Minneapolis where I realized what an amazing band they are. Heartless takes everything that made the band what it is, and used it as inspiration to grow. More dynamics, more tempo variation, more of the sense that they are writing the music they want to write, rather than catering to the fans. Every song on this album could be considered one of the best of the band's career and they would not be wrong. This is such a great heartbreaking album that I hope will stand the test of time. I really hope this is the direction the band continues to go in. They can only get better from here.

1.) Pain Of Salvation- In The Passing Light Of Day
FFO- Progressive Metal

The very first album promo I received for 2017. From the first listen I knew that there was no way that anything else could compare. Other albums come so very close, and some songs I love more than this album for 2017, but this album as a whole is 100% perfection. This is a concept album about Daniel Gildenlow's struggle of health and thoughts going on in the hospital. I couldn't possibly relate more to this album as I suffered a similar fate to Gildenlow just a few months before he did, but for other reasons. I wondered if this was the end for me, I wondered if I'll ever do anything meaningful again, I contemplated to much in those days sitting in the hospital. From the last day in the hospital on, I vowed to do my best to try to improve my life in every conceivable way (while still sadly struggling). That is what this whole album is about. The fear, the unknowing, the love, the hatred, the regret, every negative and positive emotion you can possibly feel when you may be facing your mortality. I guess I should also say that the songs are absolute perfection as well. For anyone who knew my struggles from August 2013-March 2014 or if you ever had to deal with yourself or a loved one in this kind of situation, you owe it to yourself to pick up this album. It's a life changing album for me and it just may be for you as well.

And there we go 120 album of 2017 that deserve all of your love in one way or the other. I really hope you find some discoveries in this list. Let me know if you do and of course spread these lists to your friends so they can discover some new music as well.

Stay tuned in the coming weeks for most lists on music and possibly other forms of entertainment as well. But until then, this is That Drummer Guy saying, SEE YA!

THAT DRUMMER GUY'S TOP 100 ALBUMS OF 2017 PART V: 40-21

Picture
We are finally hitting the nitty gritty of the top 100 list. The area where people really start to pay attention, where all the biggest publications think they are making a massive list of albums, HA! The Top 40 albums of 2017. Of course tomorrow will be showing off the top 20, but make no mistake; any of these 40 albums (plus the previous albums mentioned) all could have been in the top 20...actually, let's continue on with the trend of making sure everyone knows what's up with this list, and let the fun begin with the close to the top of the top!

So let's begin the Top 40....COUNTDOWN STYLE!

40.) Morbid Angel- Kingdoms Disdained
FFO- Death Metal

Morbid Angel has had one of the most proficient legacies in Death Metal, while like every band, there are highs and lows; the band is back to being on the top of their game with Kingdoms Disdained. Reunited with Steve Tucker fronting the band (and of course playing bass); the band recaptures the evil, heavy, brutal, and chaos that the fans know and love about the band. As the album progressive, it gets more and more brutal and relentless; which is very much needed in 2017. It's so great to see Morbid Angel recapture the classic Death Metal throne in 2017. Bands will really need to step up with game in 2018; this is going to be a hard album to top.

39.) Subterranean Masquerade- Vagabond
FFO- Progressive Metal, Progressive Rock

The quickest turn around in a release coming in the band's career (less than 2 years) this supergroup is back with a vengeance. While former growler Paul Kuhr is no longer in the band,  Eliran Waitzman does a great job of handling the big torch left behind by Kuhr. The music is in very capable of hands showcasing so much of what has made the band so great over the years with the experimentation, production, songwriting, etc. While still a relatively underground or dare I say...subterranean band; they continue to shine and grow as the years go on and I couldn't be happier. This is what I love about prog and it is done so very well.

38.) Vangough- Warpaint
FFO- Progressive Rock, Progressive Metal

Pain of Salvation meets Tool meets a love for rabbits and you got Vangough! with their latest release, Warpaint, the band explores even more of their emotionally drive brand of Prog with stellar musicianship from everyone in the band. The songs flow so perfectly with each other and you just get a great sense of storytelling from start to finish. This is what it takes to make a standout album and I couldn't love it more. I can['t wait to see what these guys do next.

37.) The Mute Gods- Tardigrades will Inherit the Earth
FFO- Progressive Rock

The most realistically depressing album of 2017. It's not so much about emotional pain or the lost of love ones; it's about how we, as a society have all but destroyed the earth to the point where it may be beyond repair (I'm being overly optimistic here; the album flat out explains how we are screwed). But when you go beyond the lyrics, the music is such a great progression from the debut album, the production feels superb, and it just leaves you with a great feeling of awe as you listen. You will be happy with the music,m but feel miserable listening to the lyrics. No matter where you stand on the status of the earth today; just listen to this album for a bit of insight; no matter if you agree or disagree. You just may learn something new.

36.) Leprous- Melina
FFO- Progressive Rock, Progressive Metal

Covering a lot of prog in this part of the list aren't we. Well, it's very much deserved. Leprous is the kind of band that just continuously gets better with every single album. Melina expands upon more of what the band is capable of and it is such an amazing trip. From sorrow filled ballads to absolutely insane prog riffs; Leprous covers it all. You can't avoid Leprous much longer; much like their name implies, it will eventually take over and consume you. Just give in already!

35.) Galactic Cowboys- Long Way Back To The Moon
FFO- Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Progressive Metal

It took over 17 years, but one of my favorite bands of all times is back with an album that I never would have guessed would be made. Along with bands like King's X, Dredg, Fair To Midland, etc; Galactic Cowboys has everything in their formula to be one of the biggest bands in the business, but for some reason, it just never happened. That doesn't matter anymore as the band has produced some of their best songs in what could possibly be their best album to date! Such catchy and melodic songs, excellent production and a style that no one else seems to ever be able to pull off. I am really going to hope that this is the beginning of the next chapter of the band, but regardless of what happens next, I am so happy I have a new Galactic Cowboys album to add to my collection. I missed you guys!

34.) Angel Vivaldi- Synapse
FFO- Instrumental Metal

Angel Vivaldi is, without question, my favorite instrumental guitarist going today. Every note he plays is played with purpose, rather than just playing what he is capable of. I miss that so much in instrumental music. Anyways, Synapse is a concept album about all the different chemicals that flows through the human brain. Every song matching each chemical in a great way. While quite the short album; it's one that has instant replay value. Bow down before the king of instrumental metal, Angel Vivaldi!

33.) Ancient VVisdom- 33
FFO- Occult Rock

Being at 33 on my list is quite the coincidence, haha. Ancient VVisdom has had quite the journey so far in their career. From some amazing highs to soul shattering lows. 33 perfectly captures where the band is at in their lives right now, and of course praising the king of the underworld. The acoustic parts strike you perfectly, the heavy moments hit you just right and the album takes you away into the depths of evil in the best way possible. This whole group of guys are such great people, I really hope that 2018 is when the band goes out and destroys the world with more live rituals than ever before.

32.) Tokyo Motor Fist
FFO- Everything That Was Good About 80s Metal

Easily the most positive album on my list for 2017. It is 100% 80s love and passion, but done in 2017. The whole band features some of the best names in that time frame creating music that just needs to heard today. No over the top solos, no political messages, not hate; just a great collection of rock songs that you can tell come straight from the heart. I love this album so much and you should too!

31.) Perihelion Ship- To Paint A Bird Of Fire
FFO- Progressive Death Metal

A band that I am proud to say has grown in popularity since I talked about them with their debut album; Perihelion Ship has gotten even bigger and better with their sophomore album. The prog parts stand out so much more, the death metal moments mean so much more, and every single thing about the band is improved upon in the best ways possible. If you even remotely dig Progressive Death Metal, you are doing yourself a giant disservice by missing out on these guys, check them out now and make their fan base grow into what it deserves to be!

30.) Nullingroots- Into The Grey
FFO- Post Black Metal, Black Gaze

I love these guys so very much! Every single release just speaks to me and grabs me from beginning to end. With the band's 2nd album to feature vocals, the band expands upon their amazing sound in the best ways possible. The atmospheric parts are even more beautiful, the songwriting feels even better, everything just clicks in all the right ways. Give these guys the love they deserve; go check them out and see why I love the band so very much!

29.) Cryptodira- The Devil's Despair
FFO- Progressive Death Metal, Post Metal

Had I heard this album sooner, it would be in my top 5 of the year, if not higher! This album captures everything I love about the band with their best production to date, best songwriting to date, and what I really hope will be their true breakout album. This album needs to be heard by all metal fans around. Why disservice yourself by ignoring the imagination, songwriting, and beauty that is Cryptodira? You know you wanna make this one of your favorite albums, you just haven't heard it yet. Go....GO!!!

28.) The Mantle- The Mantle
FFO- Instrumental Progressive Metal

My instrumental album of the year and one of my favorite debut albums I've heard in such a long time. Capturing all the things I love in instrumental metal, from captivating songwriting, to diversity and showmanship, to just a great display of how instrumental music should be done in the heavier side of things. This is just their debut album, I know that if everything goes right, they will just grow to become one of the biggest names of their style. Bands like Animals as Leaders better watch out; The Mantle is about to take their spot on top of the ma....ok bad pun; you know where I was going with that. Just go check these guys out. You literally have no reason to miss out as the album is free on bandcamp. GO CHECK THEM OUT!

27.) Junius- Eternal Rituals for the Ascension of Light
FFO- Post Metal, Atmospheric Metal

Ever since seeing the band open for Enslaved and Alcest, I have been in love with this band. Such a great eerie mystique that captures me in a hauntingly beautiful gaze every time I listen to them. This album returns what makes the band so great, but showing off more variety in sound and atmosphere. Junius is one of the best underground bands in existence and while I love having this band in my back pocket, they deserve your love too. Go check them out and have your jaw ready to be dropped.

26.) Mutiny Within- Origins
FFO- Progressive Metal, Metalcore

From releasing one of the best debuts of the 21st century to years of internal struggle to rising from the ashes once again to release their best album to date. This album captures everything I love about the debut album, but even more so, expands their sound in all the right ways to show that the band has more life for years upon years to come. Don't ever write off Mutiny Within, no matter what can happen in people's lives, they can easily gather their bearing and creating something truly meaningful. That's exactly what Origins is from start to finish. Go pick this up!

25.) Body Count- Bloodlust
FFO- Heavy Metal, Rap Metal, Political Commentary, Horror

I didn't realize how much I loved Body Count till the band's last album, Manslaughter. It captured everything I needed to hear at the time, and even now is so deserving of your ears. Bloodlust goes even further with that in mind. The evil parts are even more evil, the heavy parts are even heavier, the messages about life in 2017 couldn't be more accurate. Plus it features one of the most unique covers of Slayer you'll hear this side of Tori Amos. BOdy Count destroys on every level and Bloodlust shows that blood coursing through the veins of Ice T and Co. are from finsished. Find out why!

24.) Vattnet- Vattnet
FFO- Atmospheric Metal, Post Rock, Alternative Metal

Talk about a complete change in direction, but being exactly what you would expect. Vattnet has changed everything from their foundation, to lineup, to sound to name (dropping Viskar from the second half of their name). Vattnet is focusing on the more melodic, inspiring, and atmospheric parts of their sound and making...dare I say..the first happy album in the band's career. While the band's earlier work is top notch with it's blend of Black Metal; this is exactly where the band needed to go to stay such an inspiring band, and I can't commend them enough for doing so. Bravo guys! You are making the music you want to make, and listening to it always puts a smile on my face. I can't ask for anything more.

23.) CyHra- CyHra
FFO- Melodic Metal, Melodeath without screams

The most perfect paring that I would have never dreamed of. Jake E (ex Amaranthe) and Jesper Stromblad (Ex In Flames) have found a kinship that I couldn't possibly relate to more. Burned from past musical endeavors, this band combines what makes both guys so happy and wouldn't you believe it; they created one of the most impressive debuts of 2017! Every song is catchy with the right amounts of melodic and heavy moments throughout. I can't wait to see what these guys do next as this is exactly what I was hoping for when I first heard about the band. Now that they know it's a winning formula, the sky is the limit from here on out.

22.) Cavalera Conspiracy- Psychosis
FFO- Early Day Sepultura, Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal

You are lying to yourself if you can say you missed the early day sound of Sepultura. Whether it is the current incarnation of said band, or anything the Cavalera Brothers have done since their respective departures. This captures it all. The evil, the heavy, the brutal, the speed, and even some great noise and industrial moments for a new good measure. This has everything you love about those day, but with cleaner production and and some of the best songs these two brothers have been in their entire careers. The sound Speultura originally created is alive....IT'S ALIVE!!!

21.) Witherfall- Nocturnes and Requiems
FFO- Dark Metal, Power Metal, Progressive Metal

It's going to be extremely hard to be unbiased here, but I do not care. This album is the most perfect example of what drummer, Adam Sagan has done on his short time on earth. One of the greatest, most positive and loving guys I will ever know, Adam showcased his final drum recordings on this debut album, which features an amazing lineup featuring members formerly of White Wizzard and currently in Iced Earth. So many epic songs, such a great array of emotions, and such an unbelievably stellar performance from everyone involved. Adam Sagan is one of the few people in my life that encouraged me not only to keep doing what I do as That Drummer Guy, but helped talk me out of suicide so many times; I didn't deserve him in my life, but I was so lucky to have him be a part of it for as long as I did. If you enjoy anything musically I described or if you wanna hear the drummer that kept me and continues to keep me moving on from the afterlife...pick up this album!

And that does it folks, an emotional end to the bottom 80 albums of my Top 100 list. Tune in tomorrow for the top of the top, the best of the best, the yadda yadda of the yadda yadda....THE TOP 20 ALBUMS OF 2017!!!

Hey Everybody! I'm back for round 4 of this musical endeavor known as That Drummer Guy's Top 100 Albums of 2017. In this particular section we will be hitting past the half way mark of list all the way to number 41 from number 60. Let's find out if any of your new favorite discoveries or your favorite album of the year is in this part of the list.

But before we do, you know what time it is. time to explain to the newcomers what this Top 100 list is all about.

Here we go, Albums 60-41

60.) SicociS- Requiem Of The World
FFO- Progressive Metal, Power Metal, Symphonic Metal

The debut album from this Las Vegas Metal band covers so much ground that I simply love. Stellar songwriting, excellent musicianship, and top notch instrumentation. Taking upon so many great Prog, Power and Symphonic influences and fusing it into their own spectacular sound; SicociS is going to continue to take the world by storm one release at a time. IF this is what they got fir their debut album, my jaw is going to drop upon hearing the next album.

59.) Pillorian- Obsidian Arc
FFO- American Folk Metal, Agalloch

Born from the Ashes of Agalloch, Pillorian continues to explore many of the landscapes Agalloch conquered, but with a new sense of direction. There's not really too much I can add to that statement. If you miss the old school Agalloch sound, but want it just different and original enough, check out Pillorian who continues to keep that spirit alive in a brand new animal.

58.) Nocturnal Rites- Phoenix
FFO-  Power Metal

After 9 solid albums, Nocturnal Rites continues their legacy with one of the most stellar Power Metal albums of the year. The siring highs, the melodic lows, the perfect atmosphere and the knowledge of knowing that Swedish Power Metal is alive and well. An absolute masterclass of Power Metal songwriting.

57.) The Faceless- In Becoming a Ghost
FFO- Technical Death Metal, Progressive Death Metal

this album just came out this past Friday (December 1st) had I gotten the album sooner, this would been one of the highest ranked albums of the year, but I sadly just didn't have enough time to digest the album enough to make it higher than this. I also know there is going to be a lot of controversy surrounding this album because of the band...I don't care about that stuff! I care about the quality of the album presented and if the people involved have been good to me and those I know. All I can say in the latter is that Ken Sorceron has always been cool to me, whether we agree or disagree on any subject. And as for the former, I have loved every single album and up to this point, Autotheism was my favorite Faceless album. This album has the absolute possibility of beating that out for me, but not yet as I have had only a few days to digest it. But from what I've gotten over the last few days is a fantastic display of songwriting, technicality, melodic and harmonic overtones and such a great, fresh feel for the band. Feel free to let me know how wrong I am about liking the band and the album; thankfully outside influence like that does not affect this list; so let's move on shall we?

56.) Broken Hope- Mutilated and Assimulated
FFO- Death Metal, The Thing

Do you like brutal Death Metal? Do you like the horror movie, The Thing? Well this album combines the best worlds, a concept album that serves as a great soundtrack to the album as well. Easily the best musicianship and songwriting from the band so far. Top notch production. and just a killer (no pun intended) concept for an album. This is a fun album to enjoy whether you are fan of the band, a horror movie fan, or both. Time to get mutilated and assimilated!

55.) Night Demon- Darkness Remains
FFO- Classic Metal, Speed Metal, Horror

The long awaited sophomore album from Night Demon is upon us. This picks up right where Curse Of The Damned left us; with the Classic and Speed Metal sound we love, but much more in the ideals of lyrics as covers a lot of ground on this album, with songs actually being attached to each other lyrically. We need more albums like this where you can throw this on and just enjoy. Such fantastic stuff.

54.) Ghost Bath- Starmourner
FFO- Atmospheric Black Metal, Blackgaze

the third full release from this Black Metal band expands upon their signature sound with more Post Rock and experimental moments. This is definitely not a band for everyone who enjoys this style of music. The vocals are an absolute love/hate situation and if you hate the style of Black Metal that features more of the Post Rock, Atmospheric and Experimental elements, you are going to have a bad time with this band. For everyone else, Ghost Bath continues to shine through the darkness and create some hauntingly beautiful music. Check it out and see if it's for you!

53.) King Parrot- Ugly Produce
FFO- Grindcore, Thrash Metal, Fun

One of the most fun Metal albums of the year. King Parrot continues on their trek to make metal a little less serious and more about having fun in life. Whether it's the absolutely insane live shows, or just everything they accomplish on record., this Australian band can do no wrong and they prove that so very well with Ugly Produce.

52.) Inanimate Existence
FFO- Progressive Death Metal

Quite possibly the best sleeper album of the year! While there has been some controversy that THANKFULLY seems to have gone away, I hope it can bring people back into what this album has to offer...some of the most expertly crafted Progressive Death Metal in YEARS! Lyrically, sonicly, songwriting, musicianship, tone; this album has it all.Go buy this album and discover one of Metal's best kept secrets, this band is going to continue to flourish.

51.) Apocalypse Orchestra- The End Is Nigh
FFO- Folk Metal, Doom Metal, Heavy Metal

This band takes the idea of Folk Metal and breathes it new life. Much an unholy mix of Bathory, Candlemass and traditional folk, this debut album really gives you a completely haunting adventure of the senses. You're not going to hear any of the stereotypical folk metal cliches on this one; it is a complete revision of what is possible in the genre. Don't just take my word for it, go check them out. They deserve all the love they can get!

50.) The Ongoing Concept- Places
FFO- Protest The Hero, The Chariot

What a great entry to start off the 2nd half of this gigantic list. The Ongoing Concept is easily one of my favorite discoveries of the year. This band is incapable of writing the same song twice. Taking so many styles and blending them all in away that fits so perfectly, this band is continuing to blow people's minds from their originality and for lack of a better term...concept. Go give their album and spin and be prepared for what they have in store.

49.) Grave Digger- Healed By Metal
FFO- Power Metal, Heavy Metal

If you are familiar with Grave Digger, I don't need to explain this album to you. It's fun, catchy, heavy, and such an absolute pleasure to listen to from start to finish. A perfect fit with the rest of their catalog, but completely stands on it's own merit. I love this band, I love this album. That's all you need.

48.) The Black Dahlia Murder- Nightbringers
FFO- Melodic Death Metal, Black Metal, Thrash Metal

What can I say about this band that I or everyone else hasn't said over the course of their legacy? They improve on every album. Every single album gets tighter and fresher and has riffs and moments that will make your jaw drop to the ground. If you arern't on TBDM Hype-train yet, this album, despite my efforts, will not sway you, but for those keen on giving it a try, you'll see why is is the best TBDM album to date!

47.) Integrity- Howling, For The Nightmare Shall Consume
FFO- Metalcore, Hardcore, Punk, Evil

It blows my mind how this band finds a way to continuously improve with every album. This concept album drags you to the pits of hell and leaves you there to die. Through rip-roaring riffs, metallic chaos, and such evil overtones; Integrity is just like fine wine, only gets better with age. Come see why Integrity is at the top of their game!

46.) Dying Fetus- Wrong One To Fuck With
FFO- Death Metal, Grindcore

Possibly my favorite album title of 2017, Dying Fetus took everything that makes their signature sound so pleasing and builds on it with the absolute best production of their career mixed with the best songs of their catalog to date. While this is not the album for people who don't enjoy the Brutal Death Metal, Grindcore, and Slam Metal that is associated their style, for those with an open ear, they will find something to absolutely enjoy on this album. Absolutely top notch work!

45.) Paradise Lost- Medusa
FFO- Gothic Metal, Doom Metal

The band's previous album is easily my favorite PL album to date. Medusa took all of the heaviest moments of that album and showcased the dark, brooding, evil, and evil moments that long times have wanted for years. Almost every song has the classic Paradise Lost sound, but still a completely new experience. If you want your Paradise Lost with no hope in sight, this is the album for you.

44.) Bison You Are Not The Ocean You Are The Patient
FFO- Sludge Metal, Doom Metal, Heavy Metal

One of Vancouver's best kept secrets, Bison (Formerly Bison B.C.) has returned to bring you to the pits of despair in the most beautiful of ways. If you enjoy what bands such as The Ocean bring you as far as Prog, Sludge, and Doom, Bison will become your new favorite band. The album can hit home with so many people lyrically and its equally matched with it's tone in production and songwriting. I can't love this album enough and you should love it as well.

43.) Art Of Anarchy- The Madness
FFO- Hard Rock, Heavy Metal

I never thought I would utter these words...this is the best thing Scott Stapp has ever done in his career. As if this supergroup of musicians wasn't already on course for greatness and sadly, heartache, the band kept both of those things going with the addition of Scott Stapp. Almost rightfully so, there was a lot of skeptics of the news, but I for one wanted to hear the album as Bumblefoot has yet to let me down when he has his full hands on a project. From the opening seconds of the album, I knew everyone involved made the right choice. You would never expect to hear Stapp sing over Thrash riffs, but in 2017, now you can. Everyone on this album shines and the whole album is fantastic from start to finish. I can't wait to see where the band goes from here and huge Kudos to Scott Stapp for pulling out quite possibly the best vocal work of his career.

42.) With The Dead- Love From With The Dead
FFO Doom Metal, Sludge Metal

THE HEAVIEST ALBUM OF 2017, IF NOT THE CENTURY SO FAR! That's all you need to know. Another sentence after this one will not give this album justice; just check it out!

41.) Exhumed- Death Revenge
FFO- Death Metal, Grindcore

Exhumed's Magnum Opus. The band's first ever concept album is based on true life crimes in Scotland that was almost tailor made for the band. Every single thing I love about this band is showcased in one way or the other on this album. The blast beats, the vocals, the melodic riffs, the lyrics, EVERYTHING! Exhumed, while having a great fan base, isn't anywhere near as big as it should be. Maybe this quick review will help bring those numbers up as this is a masterpiece of death. Don't just take my word for it, spin it, spin it again, and then another time for good measure.

Alright folks, there's album 60-41. Next up we begin the journey that is known as the Top 40 albums of the year. Hold on tight, we are far from finished!

Welcome back for Part III. We are getting into the center of this whole 100 album countdown with this one (and technically, the next one as well). For those that are skipping around and missing the previously talked about 40 albums, here is is the rules you may have missed:

Alright Folks! It's time for the list you've all been waiting for...THE TOP 100 ALBUMS OF 2017!

So let's continue on with Albums 80-61!

80.) Iron Reagan- Crossover Ministry
FFO- Crossover Thrash

Iron Reagan returns with it's most diverse release to date. While the formula of the band is the same, it expands it's sound to include more styles including homages to Suicidal Tendencies and other Crossover Thrash bands we all know and love. If you want your Thrash to be full of energy, speed, and partying, but just a tad more political, go check out Iron Reagan.

79.) Inglorious- II
FFO- Hard Rock, Classic Rock, Heavy Metal

DO you miss that 70s/80s Hard Rock where it was about writing great songs while still being able to show off everyone in the band? That's exactly what Inglorious does to a T. Catchy as all get go, superb songwriting, and every single member of the band shines in their own way. The band is just getting bigger and better; hope on the Inglorious train now before it leaves the station.

78.) Diablo Swing Orchestra- Pacifisticuffs
FFO- Avant Garde Metal, Swing, Progressive Rock, Symphonic Metal

Had I received this album earlier,. it would have been much higher up on this list. This album is absolutely NOT for everyone. It is an acquired taste, covering so much ground of Swing, Tango, Prog, Metal, Symphonic, Avant Garde and many other styles I know I'm missing. They truly a genre of their own accord. If you want something more adventurous. If you want to discover a band where it sounds like an unholy mix of Frank Zappa, Unexpect, Mr. Bungle, and The Stray Cats, give this album a try. It may take you a while to comprehend everything, but it's worth the investment in time.

77.) Dead By April- Worlds Collide
FFO- Modern Metal, Metalcore

I have a real soft spot for these guys. Upon first listen, you wouldn't think it would be something I listen to that often, BUT, they write some of the absolute catchiest songs you will ever hear in metal that have true meaning behind them and make you want listen over and over again. Whether it is some of their more metalcore tinges, or their love ballads, they simply do things right. Worlds Collide is another great example of how simplicity and beautiful songwriting is key.

76.) Evocation- The Shadow Archetype
FFO- Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal

Finding that perfect niche between classic Death Metal and Melodeath; Evocation returns with their latest album filled with super brutal riffs matched with the perfect amount of melodic riffs to offset each other. If you want an album that's not afraid to be what it wants to be, pick this album out. It covers so much ground on what is so good in Death Metal.

75.) Caligula's Horse- In Contact
FFO- Progressive Metal, Progressive Rock

This is a band that just continues to get better and better with every release. Taking the best parts of their sound so far and expanding upon it, this makes for, easily, their best album to date. So catchy in it's technicality, heavy in all the right moments, and the melodies and harmonies shine like never before. Be sure to keep your eye out for these guys, they are only going to get better and better.

74.) Warbringer- Woe To The Vanquished
FFO- Thrash Metal, Heavy Metal, Black Metal

There's no other way to describe it. This is the BEST Warbringer album to date. It has every single thing you love about the band and for the first time in a LONG time; not afraid to show off their Black Metal sides in just the right moments. This is easily one of the best Thrash albums of the year. You are doing yourself a giant disservice by missing out on this one. Go get it NOW!

73.) Kreator- Gods Of Violence
FFO- Thrash Metal

Kreator has continued to be one of the most consistent and exciting Thrash bands today even after 33 years of existence. While many bands with that legacy taper off in quality, Kreator just gets better and better. Catchy, heavy, relevant lyrics and top notch songwriting and production; Kreator continues to show every thrash band that has come after them how it's done.

72.) Dragonforce- Reaching Into Infinity
FFO- Power Metal, Fun

Can you think of a more polarizing Power Metal band than Dragonforce? I can't! If you enjoy Power Metal you either love this band or you despise them. I am of the former. Especially over the band's last 3 albums, the band has expanded what they are capable of. The songs are, for the most part, shorter, but trimming off all the unneeded fat. Focusing on what the band is best at in the forefront and then experimenting with their sound in all the right moments; Dragonforce carries on with their very fun style of Power Metal that just brings a smile to your face if you just let it happen. Also their bonus cover of Death's Evil Dead is a cover I didn't know I needed in my life. The band is more than fire and flames, check this out and find out why.

71.) DispersE- Forward
FFO- Progressive Metal, Fantasy Music

This band continues to be one of the best underground prog bands to exist. With the band's latest offering, the band expands upon it's fantasy flavored prog sound (no, not power metal fantasy, it's positive fantasy). Imagine a mix between Devin Townsend, Cynic, Textures, and positivity...you've got DispersE. If you need an album to really brighten your spirits and you want a musical adventure, check out DispersE. You won't be disappointed.

70.) Wolfheart- Tyhjyys
FFO- Finnish Melodeath

What is it with Finland and their amazing resume of Melodeath bands? I can't name a single Melodeath band from Finland that just is anything less than excellent. Wolfheart is absolutely one of those bands. With their latest offering, it focuses much more on the Death and Black Metal that helps contribute to their sound, but all the right amount of melodies and harmonies that just make this country so great when it comes to standout music. While not the biggest band of their style, they are absolutely solid and that's more than enough reason to give these guys a shot.

69.) Dream Evil- Six
FFO- Power Metal, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal

Heavy Metal's guilty pleasure is back with their sixth album and they are absolutely on the top of their game. It doesn't matter if they are writing their anthemic bangers or their more melodic ballads; the band covers so much ground and does it with such a style that brings joy to your sense. If you drop your elitist attitude and let this sink in, you understand why Dream Evil is still writing incredible music.

68.) Uncured- Medusa
FFO- Progressive Death Metal

With the band only forming three years ago, Uncured has released one of the most absolutely solid debut albums in such a long time. Not afraid to let their influences shine while making everything it's own, Uncured is a top notch band that destroys live and and proves on this album that they are going to take the metal world by storm. Seriously, if this is just their debut album, they are only going to become better and better as time rolls on. Can't wait to see what's next.

67.) Polkadot Cadaver- Get Possessed
FFO- Basically anything Todd Smith Does

Polkadot Cadaver came from the ashes of Dog Fashion Discover many years ago. Now that DFD is back in full force, Polkadot Cadaver has become it's own entity that writes some very inspired music. The lyrics are quite quirky, keyboards take place of the brass section you'd hear from DFD, and songs unquestionably heavy and catchy; Polkadot Cadaver just hits the mark on so much of what I love in music. Discover your new musical possession.

66.) Carach Angren- Dance And Laugh Amongst The Rotten
FFO- Symphonic Black Metal

Quite the polarizing band in their own right, Carach Angren has continued to become more and more successful as time moves on. With the band's 5th album, they created a haunting concept album that captures everything that makes the band so good. So much melody and harmony amongst the evil and chaos. I feel like this album is going to go under the radar for a lot of people and compared to where the band's last album landed for me, it has for me too. But make no mistake, this is an absolute evil thrill ride. Jump in!

65.) Vallenfyre- Fear Those Who Fear Him
FFO- Death Metal, Grindcore, Doom Metal

Vallenfyre is incapable of releasing a disappointing album. This is no exception. The grind parts are even more insane, the Doom fills you with more despair, the Death Metal you simply succumb to. Everything I love about this band is in full force on this album. You need an album like this in your life if you enjoy heavy music.

64.) Scale The Summit- In A World Of Fear
FFO- Instrumental Metal, Progressive Rock

Scale The Summit returns for a musical soundtrack that is just begging for a film to be made based on it. With a new lineup, new attitude, and a straight up passion for writing good music; Scale The Summit continues to be one of the standout bands in it's style. Instrumental music needs something to bring you back to it time and time again, and these guys simply nailed it on this album. This is how it's done.

63.) Vintersorg- Till Fjalls del II
FFO- Viking Metal, Progressive Metal

The follow up to the 1998 debut, Vintersorg continues to create majestic, beautiful and thought provoking Metal that makes you feel like you are right in the middle of a Scandinavian forest about to do battle with a winter storm. One of the most distinct voices in Scandinavian Metal, Vintersorg really shines through with this much needed sequel. I can't wait to see what's next.

62.) Persefone- Aathma
FFO- Progressive Death Metal

The fact that Persefone is not one of the biggest names in Metal right now is an absolute shame. But on the plus side, they are getting bigger with every release. With Aathma, the band continues to forge it's signature sound while expanding upon what is capable. It is done to absolute perfection. I really hope these guys will continue to shine, they deserve all the love they have revived so far and every new fan they make in the future. Find out why these guys will soon be taking charge of the Progressive Metal world.

61.) Need- Hegaiamas: A Song For Freedom
FFO- Progressive Metal

I can't believe I never discovered this band earlier. The darkness of Evergrey, the proficiency of Dream Theater and the power of Pain Of Salvation. If you want some Progressive Metal with pure, unadulterated, power and emotion you....NEED....to check this band out. There's nothing else I can say to sell you on this band, just go check them out!

There we go folk, Part III has now come to a close. Stay tuned for That Drummer Guy's Top 100 Albums of 2017 Part IV: 60-41

Alright Folks! It's time for the list you've all been waiting for...THE TOP 100 ALBUMS OF 2017!

For any first timers to my style of Best of Lists, here is a quick run down (which I'll also be featuring on the other parts of the top 100 and other musical lists as well.)

As with the last few years of this list I made up criteria of what constitutes this list and it is as follows:

So let's get this party started! Albums 100-81!

100) M.O.D.- Busted, Broke, & American
FFO- Hardcore, Pop Punk, Billy Milano

It's about time that we got a new album in some capacity from Billy Milano, and we got some of his best work to date. Covering so much ground about the current state of the world. Fast, heavy, and unapologetic, I wouldn't have M.O.D. be any other way. It's awesome to see Milano back and writing such awesome music.

99.) Satan Takes A Holiday- Aliens
FFO- Garage Rock

YOU don't need to be complex and heavy all the time. Sometimes all you need is a good, catchy song. That is exactly what Satan Takes A Holiday perfects. A great collection of songs running the gambit of Rock and Roll, but keeping their awesome sound. A lot of Top 40 Rock bands could really learn something from these guys; music would be progressing a lot further if that was the case.

98.) Panzer- Fatal Command
FFO- NWOBHM, Thrash Metal

Schmier (Destruction) can really do no wrong and that's definitely the case with the sophomore album from this amazing lineup known as Panzer. Fast, heavy, catchy, just the right amount of thrash with the NWOBHM showcased and just stellar songwriting. If you wanna hear how a revival of the NWOBHM should sound, do yourself a favor and pick this up!

97.) Elvenking- Secrets of the Magick Grimoire
FFO- Folk Metal, Power Metal

Elvenking has always been one of the more underrated bands of it's style. The positive thing that comes with that is the band gets to keep it's integrity and write the music they want to write. This latest album showcases their strongest assets of Power Metal, Folk Metal, and brilliant songwriting. IF you need something fresh in your Power Metal, make sure to check out Elvenking!

96.) Boris- Dear
FFO- Doom Metal, Stoner Rock, Post Rock

The Japanese masters of experimentation are back with Dear. A more atmospheric blend of Doom and Stoner rock. Great heavy moments, lots of drone/atmospheric moments, and a great sonic trip for the senses. There is rumor that this is part of their final recording sessions (which I really hope is not the case). IF that is true, this first album of those sessions is the start of a fantastic sendoff.

95.) Stephen Pearcy- Smash
FFO- Ratt, 80s Metal, 80s Hard Rock

I'm not sure what it is (though the trend is dying off, thankfully) where bands and musicians from the 80s consistently feel they have to write bland, uninspired adult contemporary music. Kudos to them for writing what they want to write, but it almost never feels inspired. That is totally NOT the case here. It can be easy to write off Pearcy or anyone associated with Ratt thanks to all the controversy surrounding the band, but you'd be foolish to do so. There is some great heavy rockers on this album, some heartfelt ballads and an overall consistent album that really just speaks for itself. Smash proves that no matter what era of music you come from, you are always capable of writing your best music in the present.

94.) Cut Up- Wherever They May Rot
FFO- Classic Death Metal

Fast, heavy, aggressive, evil, and phenomenal songwriting. This is how I love my Death Metal. While more over the top, technical, and diverse Death Metal bands are ones I love, sometimes all I need is an album of bangers. That's what this album is.  For the Death Metal fan in you, go pick this up, kick back, and enjoy.

93.) Jorn- Life on Death Road
FFO- Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Power Metal

Jorn Lande is one of my favorite frontman in all of music. Besides just being an absolutely great guy, he has such an amazing range in his vocals and such a keen ear to what should be on an album. Life On Death Road is Jorn's first solo album in quite a number of years, but it's great to have this album to see where Jorn's state of mind is. With a new lineup, a very inspired sound, and just a great collection of songs, Jorn can do no wrong.

92.) Comeback Kid-  Controller
FFO- Metalcore, Hardcore, Pop Punk

In a quite interesting turn of events, this is one of the poppiest albums in Comeback Kid's catalog. While there are some great rippers on the album, there is just as many great pop punk future classic that feel just as appropriate. It's great to hear the band making a true effort to make the album they want to make, and it was absolutely for the best.

91.) The Dark Element- The Dark Element
FFO- Modern Metal, Power Metal, Hard Rock

Such a great collaboration of Annette Olzon and Jani Liimatainen. Taking the idea of writing catchy, poppy metal with showing off the styles of Nightwish and Cain's Offering that they are best known for. There is no filler on this album, just a great mix of Rock, Metal, and Pop, that is sure to have find something you really enjoy. Give it a try.

90.) GWAR- The Blood Of Gods
FFO- Heavy Metal, Punk Rock, GWAR

This album is a complete shock to the system. There are so many people that wrote off the band when frontman Oderus Urungus passed away. It really feels like the band took that negative energy now surrounding the band and make one of the best albums in the band's history. Much more focus on Punk Rock, great catchy melodies, and and overall sense that GWAR, while missing their fallen frontman of the past, has just as much life in the band as ever before. DO yourself a favor; if you wrote off the band, change your mind and give this album a proper chance. You'll be glad you did.

89.) Ember Falls- Welcome To Ember Falls
FFO- Modern Metal

This absolutely stunning debut album blew my mind. While the album is listed down this far on the list, do not let this throw you off. IF you want one of the most inspired Modern Metal album you've ever heard, pick this one up! It covers so much ground on catchiness, melodies, harmonies, and heaviness, it's a sound that I know the band will progress on for years to come. IF this is just the debut, just wait for what is to come next.

88.) Trees On Mars- Hello, Mr. Pioneer
FFO- Instrumental Rock, Progressive Rock, Post Rock

The Sophomore album from this trio showcases everything that was awesome about the first album and expands upon it tenfold. The catchy moments are catchier. The heavy moments are heavier, the prog is proggier. Just a completely solid album from start to finish and a great display of how bands that don't use vocals should be writing their albums.

87.) Cannibal Corpse- Red Before Black
FFO- Death Metal

You know what you are getting with a CC album. It's going to be fast, it's going to be brutal, and it's going to have moments that remind you why you love the album so much. With Erik Rutan back on production; the band has written their best album since Kill. There's not really any more you need to know. Cannibal Corpse is rejuvenated and they are still at the top of their game.

86.) Life Of Agony- A Place Where There's No More Pain
FFO- Groove Metal, Alternative Metal

LOA's first album in 8 years and 5th overall; the band has put their stamp onto the metal legacy with their blend of haunting grooves and heavy atmosphere. The band sounds just as fresh as ever with this release. With the band rejuvenated and ready to rock, the band is showing that no matter what happens with the band and it's members, they will always put out a solid release that is well worth your time.

85.) Trivium- The Sin And The Sentence
FFO- Trivium

There is really no point in trying to categorize Trivium in 2017. No two albums sound the same, whether it's the Metalcore classic, Ascendancy or the band's last album that was heavy on Power Metal and Modern Rock, Silence In The Snow. This album showcases a little bit of everything the band can pull off. If you've dug anything Trivium has done in the past, you'll easily find something to enjoy about this album. It's as if it's a best of album of all new material. Trivium has marked their place in metal history and this is another great example of how the band will just continue to impress and destroy.

84.) Serious Black- Magic
FFO- Power Metal

It's not just an album title, it doesn't just describe the tone of said, album; this album literally is magic. Serious Black is one of those amazing lineups of musicians that seems incapable of writing a dud if they tried. Magic covers so much ground of what makes Power Metal such a great genre while truly making things their own. If you want a Power Metal album to really, and I mean REALLY impress you, go check these guys out NOW!

83.) Hark- Machinations
FFO- Red Fang, Baroness, Down, Clutch

This album is going to be under the radar for a lot of people and that is a complete crying shame. This is such a great, inspired album. If you dig that Southern Metal/Stoner Metal vibe that the bands listed in the FFO section does, this band does it with a unique twist and does it flawlessly. You need this band in your life, quit holding out!

82.) MindMaze- Resolve
FFO- Power Metal, Progressive Metal

Had I heard the album earlier in the year, this would be much higher up on my list. With the band's 3rd full length, they have really found their niche of Prog, Power, and their own influences to great fantastic epics, solid singles, and haunting ballads. This band is continuing to grow bigger and bigger with every release; once you give them a listen, it'll be easy to understand why.

81.) Antropomorphia- Sermon Ov Death
FFO- Death Metal

Much like I talked about above with Cut Up; I love completely solid Death Metal. When done right there is no need for extra frills and gimmicks, you just need solid songwriting. Antropomorphia does this in strides. While tempo fluctuates throughout the album, it is one of it's biggest highlights. Whether it is all guns blazing, or just a mid tempo monster, the band covers it all and it just continues to slay listen after listen. Truly evil Death Metal with everything you need to get lead to the darkness. Go pick this up!

And there you go kids. 20 albums down, 80 to go. Stay tuned for Part III: 80-61. The hits will keep on coming, guaranteed!

THAT DRUMMER GUY'S TOP ALBUMS OF 2017 PT. 1: THE HONORABLE MENTIONS

Picture
Hey Everybody!

Welcome back to my favorite time of the musical year, where I get to tell you all about the best music of 2017. While you may have noticed that I have been quite busy this year with doing over 50% more interviews than last year; I have had to scale back on some listening just a tinge to keep my sanity. That's not to say that I haven't collected 120 of, what I feel are, the best albums of the year!

I can't state enough how any album featured in the following 6 lists are albums I really, really enjoy. Not a single one of these I consider to be bad or meh or something I feel you shouldn't check out. While many struggle to put together 3 or 5 or 10 of their favorite albums of the year. I struggle to make a top 100 without feeling like I left something awesome out. So this is my best compromise with doing 20 Honorable Mentions to show off albums that I really dig, but just didn't get the love that they deserved on my end 100% because of time restraints.

Now let's have some fun and see if I can't help you discover at least one new band over the following week!

THAT DRUMMER GUY'S TOP 20 HONORABLE MENTIONS!
(IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER)

1.) Alestorm- No Grave But The Sea
FFO- Pirate Metal (Pirate Themed Power Metal)

Alestorm continues to to pillage and plunder their way into our hearts. This is easily one of the most fun Alestorm albums in ages., Great diversity, stellar songwriting, and so many signs the band is far from scrapping the bottom of the barrel. The band has gotten even more worldwide attention thanks to being on this year's Vans Warped Tour, and rightfully so. If you keep skipping out on these guys, this album should make you think twice about avoiding them any longer.

2.) Avatarium- Hurricanes And Halos
FFO- Doom Metal, Heavy Metal, Classic Metal

Avatarium returns with their 3rd album in four years. The band is sounding tighter than ever with such catchy songwriting, soaring vocals, and and incredibly evil feel throughout the album that really hearkens into the evils of rock and roll. If you need doom metal with variety, Avatarium should be on your next to buy list.

3.) Byzantine- The Cicada Tree
FFO- Groove Metal, Thrash Metal, Progressive Metal

What has easily become my favorite Byzantine album to date, The Cicada Tree is Byzantine continuously reinventing themselves while keeping everything that makes them such a standout band. This record went under the radar for a lot of people, but this album deserves all the love it gets, Go find out why!

4.) Converge- The Dusk In Us
FFO- Metalcore, Post Hardcore

This album is the White Pony (Deftones reference for those not playing along) of the Converge catalog. While this album of course contains many tinges of the bands extreme and metalcore roots; the band explores it's Post Rock and Post Hardcore elements that was only referenced at in the past (the title track to Jane Doe being a great example, instrumentally) This is not an album for anyone who likes when the band is mellow, but if you dig Converge but not big on their chaotic side, give this album a try. It just may leave you wanting to go back on what you have missed so far.

5.) Dead Cross- Dead Cross
FFO- Heavy Metal, Hardcore Punk

Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo playing more simplistic Dillinger Escape Plan style insanity...what's not to love? A short, chaotic, twisted collection of songs that really showcase the heavy sides of everyone involved. This will be an album you continuously want to replay over and over again and you just may have to to comprehend everything going on. Fantastic stuff!

6.) Demon Hunter- Outlive
FFO- Christian Metal, Heavy Metal

The band has been so consistent with releasing catchy, heavy and enjoyable albums since their humble beginnings. With the success of their previous album, Extremist, the band takes Outlive to continue down the similar track of scaling back in the heaviness and focusing on writing catchy heavy metal. It's a winning combination for the band. If you want to enjoy some catchy christian metal without being bludgeoned over the head with over the top secular lyrics, Demon Hunter is the band for you.

7.) Krallice- Go Be Forgotten/Luum
FFO- Atmospheric Black Metal, Progressive Metal

I'm putting both of these releases together as they are under a month apart from each other in release (October 27th for Luum, November 21st for Go BE Forgotten). That is 100% why both of these albums are in the honorable mentions and not in the Top 100. With such little knowledge of the albums coming out (gotta love the surprise attacks) I haven't been able to sit down with both albums as I should but I love what I hear from both. Luum is much more melodic while Go Be Forgotten is more of the black metal/traditional Krallice sound. Both albums have their charm and deserve to be loved equally, so why separate them, go pick up both of them!

8.) The Lurking Fear- Out Of The Voiceless Grave
FFO- Traditional Black Metal, Expierimental

Do you miss the truly evil aspects of At The Gates? Fear not, the band did too! and they made new project called The Lurking Fear, which not only captures that evil horror we love, but expands upon it with very unsettling segments and tones throughout. It's the perfect yang to At The Gates ying. Killer stuff (no pun intended).

9.) Miss May I- Shadow Inside
FFO- Metalcore

The band told me in an interview earlier this year, that this is the first MMI record where they felt compelled to write the album they wanted to make. Not worrying about what sells, not worried about write Hey Mister Part II, just writing what the band has in their hearts. That was easily the best thing the band could have done. Catchy, heavy and from the heart. That's all I need in a band like Miss May I, and they put out their most flawless album to date.

10.) Nova Collective- The Further Side
FFO- Instrumental, Progressive Rock, Jazz Metal

This debut release featuring members of Between The Buried And Me, Haken, and Trioscapes. This showcases all of the quirky, wacky, and awe-inspiring instrumentation that sticks out in all the aforementioned bands, but with the twist of adding more prog and jazz elements to offset any need for vocals. Such a solid collection of songs and instrumentation. For those that wanna be inspired by authenticity, pick this up immediately!

11.) Portrait- Burn The World
FFO- Evil Heavy Metal

Taking the literal essence of satanic rituals and concepts to create classic heavy metal is just what the doctor ordered. Dark lyrics, NWOBHM/Mercyful Fate style songwriting, and a production that makes you feel like you are about to witness a blood sacrifice; Burn The World taps that market of legitimate evil metal and make it feel right. Don't miss out on this album if you are so intrigued.

12.) Primitive Man- Caustic
FFO- Doom Metal, Death Metal, Noise

Amazingly enough, this is only the second proper full length album from Primitive man since they started in 2013 (and technically 13th release counting demos, EPs, Splits, and singles). Caustic expands upon the band's sound of demented Death/Doom but adds a new layer of terror with the unsettling noise, static and soundscape that plagues (in a good way) the album. If you want an album that feels like a soundtrack to a twisted, real life, horror movie, pick up Caustic.

13.) Septicflesh- Codex Omega
FFO- Symphonic Death Metal

Sadly, a victim to not being able to enjoy this album nearly enough this year. Codex Omega continues on their the new fire the band has captured in the past decade, but expands upon it even further. The right amounts of catchy, heavy, symphonic, and intrigue. Septicflesh has one of the best album streaks going and they are showing no signs of slowing down.

14.) Set And Setting- Reflectionless
FFO- Instrumental, Post Black Metal

One of my favorite bands of the style, Set and Setting return with their latest album, Reflectionless. Focusing more on the Post side of their Post Black Metal sound, the band crafted an amazing display of songwriting that continues to prove you don't need vocals to be captivating. An album that is flying under the radar this year, you have the power to stop that from happening, go check this out!

15.) Siamese- Shameless
FFO- Rock with No Genre Boundaries

I've been following the band since they were formerly Siamese Fighting Fish. Shortening the name to the much more mainstream appealing Siamese, the band has become anything but more mainstream. While the band clearly has some songs that are meant to be on top 40 pop radio, no two songs ever sound alike and the band explores all that is capable of a rock band from heavy to mainstream to catchy to heavy. It's just one of those album you got to put on and experience. Picking out a song or two on YouTube or Spotify is a complete and utter injustice.

16.) Threat Signal- Disconnect
FFO- Metalcore

Easily the most underrated Metalcore band to ever exist. I could have sworn the band was going to lead the charge of what was possible in Metalcore, but sadly, as is the case with so many bands that don't deserve it, the band just had various issues from preventing it from happening. It feels like in 2017, the band finally threw everything expected out the window and wrote the most authentic Threat Signal album to date. Catchy, heavy, riff-centric, and captivating. Why is this not in the top 100 you ask? Completely due to the album coming out under a month ago and having to pick up the album myself, rather than a promo. Had I gotten it sooner, and honestly knew about it sooner, it would be so very high in my top 100 list. So make up for this being in my honorable mentions; go pick it up and rank it high in your list!

17.) The Unguided- And The Battle Royale
FFO: Melodic Groove Metal, The Original Sonic Syndicate Sound

Capturing everything that made the original sound of Sonic Syndicate so distinct, while expanding upon it tenfold since their start in 2011; The Unguided have written their catchiest, most melodic, and diverse album to date. Are you disappointed by the way bands that used to combine Pop and Metal and are just now making Pop flavored Rock and want that Melodic metal sound back, Go check out The Unguided!

18.) Wednesday 13- Condolences
FFO- Heavy Metal, Horror Punk

I jumped on the Wednesday 13 train so late in my life. It wasn't until I saw him live a couple years back where everything made sense to me. I love what he does with Melodic Rock, Metal, and Punk; adding all the horror and grotesque aesthetics (lyrically and image wise) to make a fantastic combination of fun music. That is completely the case here with Condolences. While not the biggest change in his career; he made an absolutely solid album that I go back to and enjoy over and over again from start to finish, and that's all I need.

19.) Wild Fire- Revolt
FFO- Modern Metal, Hard Rock

An utterly brilliant band combining what makes modern metal and hard rock so fun to listen to, but makes it stand out from the pack. Revolt is a great musical journey that shows off everything the band is capable of, no matter how heavy or melodic things get. These guys are just going to continue to get bigger and bigger and you owe it to yourself to check them out now while tickets are affordable.

20.) Wintersun- The Forest Seasons
FFO- Melodic Death Metal

Without question, the most shocking album to be on this list. How could it not be in the top 100? You guessed right, time restraints! I love every song on the album, but if you only check out a song at a time, you are not going to fully give this album the attention it deserves. That's what happened to me this year. A display of sheer brilliance, a concept album about all 4 seasons in nature. While this isn't Time II (Which I know we all want to happen eventually), WIntersun has made a triumphant album that deserves love, no matter what social media and internet message boards tell you about the band these days. Go in with no pr-conceived notions and just experience The Forest Seasons. Winter is coming upon us, you're not going to want to go outside, you don't have an excuse!

And that's it, the Top 20 Honorable Mentions of 2017. Join me Monday fro the beginning of the biggest list of them all....THAT DRUMMER GUY'S TOP 100 ALBUMS OF 2017!
